How I Discovered the Web

I first had access to a feature phone back in 2012. The phone was from a brand named, Symphony, and the model of that phone was D66, as shown below.

Before discovering the Web with that phone, my relationship with it was like, loading the memory card from computer shops, enjoying the content, and loading it back.

One day, I got back from my school in the afternoon, took the phone, and was navigating through different options. One of the options was Internet Service. There were some sub-options under the Internet Service.

I was exploring the options under IS and got into the Web. Something new loaded on the screen.

For a typical smartphone, to be able to browse the internet, you first need to turn on the Wi-Fi or mobile data. But on that phone, there wasn't any Wi-Fi option. It's only the mobile data.

And if you have some data on your phone, you don't have to turn on the data (no option for that) to use the internet. You have data, you go to the internet, it's just working.

But for my case, I didn't even buy any data. Because, I didn't have any intention to use the internet. I didn't know about it that much.

Well, how did it work for me then? Even now, I'm not 100% clear about this. But what I think is that, back then, we bought a new SIM card (Banglalink in Bangladesh). Probably, that SIM provided us with some free internet data as a bonus for buying a new SIM.

My Life with the Internet After Discovering It

My life changed dramatically after discovering the Web. I'm not that much into just multimedia entertainment on the phone anymore. My energy shifted to the web. The thing that fascinated me the most is the dynamicity of the content on the phone screen.

Dynamic images and text. Links, and when pressing on links, visiting a different page, just wow! Gradually, I was into searching the web, e.g., Google search, and trying different URLs.

Whenever I found URLs from any source, that would be the most exciting moment, thinking about trying them out. The phone though, wasn't able to browse all the URLs I would find. Even with that very basic feature phone, I did group chatting on the web, ah, that moment! I tried some web tools, including Text to Speech.

No 3G or 4G network was available. It's just 2G. The room I lived in back then, wouldn't get optimal, consistent network signals, sometimes, at night times, requiring me to hold the phone outside through the window.

Still, it didn't feel boring to me at all.

Learning Web Development

At some point, I discovered a site named Wapka Mobi, where I was able to create basic webpages on its subdomains. I had a friend who told me, "We can customize the pages that requires coding languages, such as HTML and CSS."

In 2014, I started learning HTML and CSS using another button phone—a second-hand Symphony D67 that was slightly damaged. I bought it at a very low price from one of my school friends, who was generous enough and liked me.

Two buttons on this phone wouldn't respond to soft finger presses. Pressing those buttons a bit harder would sometimes cause pain in my finger. That phone didn't have a copy-paste feature. I can still picture the day when I was trying out some code from the web, and I had to write it down on paper first before typing it into the phone.

I learned a decent amount of HTML and CSS, some very basic JavaScript, and a decent amount of jQuery using that phone. I can picture myself practicing code on the bus.

In 2017, I bought my first laptop and began practicing web design in a practical way, such as converting designs into HTML web pages.

Founding SH Web Solution

After that, I had a lot of working experience with other web designers. At some point, I got the feeling to found something with the services I offer. In 2021, I founded the brand, SH Web Solution.
